i had a friend who was so Goth and everything was Goth - that I couldn't hang out with her in public because she was a bit odd....now, as corporate lawyer she hides it and it's as if it never happened. but I think belonging to a group was important her to establish social identity and essentially conform into mainstream society

sometimes the best way to deal with being an awkward young person is to rebel. You don't have to worry about being good enough at what everyone else is doing. You just declare "I'm not playin." and you're spared that scrutiny.

it's funny and sad tho that now she would reject the person she once was... she's become a hungry materialistic keeping-up-with-the-joneses kind of person. I miss the Goth girl sometimes...she also wasn't that mean and petty. ahhh such is life

^x. You got it. That started around xth grade for me. I hated it that people were judging me cuz of my clothes. I never gave my clothes a second thought until someone told me exactly how unfashionable I was. then I felt like a big jerk and realized i didn't have it in me to keep up and so I dropped out and did my own thing, in a very obvious way

i got picked on for that kind of stuff... and yet i could never figure out why. it was never in me to *act* like that, and i seriously couldn't see the differences. so i just shunned the believers and did my own thing. like you said, "in a very obvious way." i think i'm a richer person for the experience. i definitely have a lot of joy in my life, and not a very average experience. yay, me! lucky to be different.

no I said that by being part of a group she felt security when she needed it...and it helped the awkward girl feel her way thru when she grew out of the phase and decided to join the mainstream

well in high school she wasn't goth she was a bit awkward and had juvenile diabetes...was never supposed to live past xyrs of age i didn't feel the need to conform to groups...i guess some people do and others do not
