What is considered a BBW... I have been reading ads for and they keep talking about BBW. I figured out that it stands for Big Beautiful Woman, but exactly how big is considered to be BBW? Where does the spectrum start?

It wayyyyy open to interpretation, but generally speaking it's any woman who shops in the Plus Size department or Lane Bryant or Avenue Shops (I work in a department dominated by BBWs) -- the big-girls shops, so I'd say a size 16 and up. When women get up to about a size 22 or more, they are generally ("generally" being a key word here) referred to as SSBBW (super size big beautiful woman). For those who like curvey women or women with "a little meat on the bone" a size 16 isn't really all that big.

Lane Bryant, Dress Barn Plus size, The Avenue and Catherine's smallest size is a 14, that's a 14W, which means, I bleieve, 14-women's, which I understand to be a slightly fuller cut than a standard 14. Stores like H&M mostly carry up to a size 14 as the largest, though once I came across a 16 -- that was rare. Some "regular" stores carry plus sizes, like Strawberries, they have a regular department and a "Junior Plus Size." Burlington Coat Factory has a Plus Size Department. Old Navy used to have Plus Size in the stores, but they have removed that line and only sell Plus Size online. I think *Generally Speaking* (not a hard and fast rule) most stores geared to the younger crowd carry up to a size 14 in the "regular" department and from a size 16 up in the Plus Size. Someone I know who is a Plus Size model says all the designers want size 14 models as that is considered a Plus Size in designer clothes. Some designers will accept a size 16 model, but it *almost* unheard of for a designer to accept a plus size model larger than a 16 according to her. She does mostly runway modeling.

I dont know what to tell you this isn't a competition. Because that is how it is where you are, doesn't mean it isn't different here. I'm telling my own experience.

I'm sure the standard is differnt in differnt parts of the country. The largest people are in the south, in particular Louisiana and Mississippi, so I'm sure in those areas it is more common to find a size 16 or 18 in the "regular" stores. Also, there is a difference between a 16/18 and a 16W/18W. Then there is vanity sizing, a whole nother issue. The big chains such as Lane Bryant, Catherine's, The Avenue are all over the country and have a more standard sizing -- the point of chain stores -- standardization. The topic was really what is a BBW, and I just used the sizes as a general guidline as women are shaped so differently, it was easier just to go by clothes size rather than measurements. And even based on clothes size, what is a BBW is open to interpretation depending on preference and culture. There is a lot of gray area in the definition.
