Guinea on the brink of tragedy The only thing I think of that is gay related about this was that I'm a somewhat regular poster and I serve as a Peace Corps volunteer there for years. I'm posting this because I thought that we should not allow another tragedy in the world to unfold without us being aware of it. For those who don't know, Guinea is a small country in West Africa. When I left in June 2006 to the sounds of gunfire in the streets due to a general strike. The govt. was able to hold off the imploding of the country by promising a wage hike. However, promises were not kept and 8 months later, another strike happened but was ceased on the promise of naming a new Prime Minister. However with the nomination of the new PM, the people were angry that Conte (the president) named his closed ally friend. People took to the streets again to demand he steps down. And now Conte had just declared martial law where all rights and liberties of the citizens are suspended. Many have already been killed in the general strike in January and since the declaration that the country is under siege. Peace Corps has been evacuated weeks ago and volunteers are all safe in Mali, a neighboring country. The U.S. Embassy yesterday evacuated all its non-essential personnel. All other humanitarian agencies are evacuating the country, but as all commercial flights in or out of the country have been suspended, many are still stuck in the capital. I hope you keep the Guineans in your thoughts and prayers if you're religious or spiritual. Here are some of the websites to keep updated about the situation. ( ) www.reuters.com ( )
