there's a group right here! namely, many of the posters on this board. My advice would be to watch for Fotodom and see if he responds to this. He can not only give you tons of first-hand info, but also direct you to reading material and possibly classes in your area.

Yes it's good to find people in your area. And yes, Fotodom is also a photographer (you can see his work in such books as "Screw the Roses; Send me the Thorns") and he is also a resident expert in ropework. (here on the kinkfo as well as on other fo's)
