well, she considers herself bourgeois, which I never knew was a good thing until she held it in high esteem, and she considers the people (at least in chapter x, which is as far as I've gotten) to be blue-collar/white trash. But she doesn't seem to disparage them for that. She seems to think it's kind of cute in a pat-on-the-head kind of way.

it's a generalization. philosophy majors are notorious for having no real skills to apply towards a particular field, and usually have the luxury of pursuing such a useless degree because they have some sort of financial support (trustfund, parents, etc.). my liberal arts college was full of them. and I almost became one! except I didn't have the financial requisite to justify "wasting" my college years. of course I wasted them anyway, but that was my logic back then. also:

oh wait, I didn't explain my comment. her views seem to make more sense, since, according to my generalization, she had a comfortable, if not wealthy, upbringing that afforded her the idea that 'white trash' is racist & rageful. plus, in my opinion, liberal arts colleges tend to push the idea to their students that "their" world is much better than "others", including the uneducated masses - blue collar workers, etc.

i was very critical of the philosphy set running around trying to answer unanswerable questions. i felt this way mostly because i really didn't like the ones i knew. then i took a few logic classes. they were the most challenging and fun classes i've ever taken. also, i strongly disagree with you about liberal arts educations being useless.

I said that a philosophy degree is useless. which it is, it doesn't have any use in obtaining a particular job. it's mostly an informational degree, like a stepping stone towards a higher degree. I liked my liberal arts education! you're just trying to get me into my usual doomed forum arguments.
