Don't just contact animal control. Oftne times the information the phone answerers have is not up-to-date. You have to go to the puond they take found animals to, and look for your cat. If you go there and specifiy mention to the folks who work there that your cat is missing, then supply them with contact info, it is more likely that should your pet be brought in, they'll let you know. Still, you should go and physiy check their facility every day. I don't mean to sound like an alarmist, but the longer you wait, the less likely it is that your pet will escape possible euthenasia. Depending on the facility, some only hold animals for three days. Find out what the animal hold policy is for the shelter that your local animal control agency brings foundlings to. That'll give you a better idea of how frequently you need to do a physical search at the kennel. Good luck, and my thoughts are with you. And, as for your oblivious, inconsiderate, and somewhat stupid room-mate? Well, I've got some new pliers that need breaking in...
