when I was on tour I was usually busy at night . I did take advantage of the cities I went to during the day by walking around. I would ask the people who were from there where to go and what to do. If I did not like those answers I would find a little book store or neat boutique and ask the person working there what they would be doing if not working. I never really liked the tourist thing so I would generally skip those suggestions. I have never really had a hard time finding the gay neighborhoods or spots. I miss exploring different cities. Have fun in NY!

I adore wandering around by myself. once I know I'm being sent to a city I've never been to, I'll start researching where to go, what to do, what areas to avoid, etc. I have good visual memory, so I'll try to keep a basic idea of how the streets are laid out, and then just set out! mostly I shop until the stores close, then just wander around, grab a drink at a bar or cafe that looks interesting, spark up convo. being a tourist gives you the advantage of talking to people that are more willing to talk to you than they would normally.

I like a bit of stability in an unpredictable setting. I fell into a routine of bringing a good book (or shopping for a new one) and then finding a starbucks and hanging out there for an hour or two. I enjoyed the comfort of the starbucks being the same wherever I went, and the baristas are almost always young, cute and friendly. Then I'd usually go back to the hotel & watch free cable. Work kept me pretty busy, so I didn't have much energy in my off-time. I don't miss travelling for work.

I'm the same way about wanting stability in the midst of the unfamiliar. That's why I like to stay in the same hotel every time I'm in NY. I've sort of done the main tourist things and times square, so I wanted to broaden my horizons. A book at a coffee shop is a good idea cuz it gets you out of the hotel. I only travel 2 or 3 times per year so it's still an adventure. I'm sure I'd hate it if I did it more often.

i usually have to catch up on emails and finish work that i didn't get done that day... so i do that and then take a break and go out for at a local pub... check out the city a little bit.. have a really good meal and then back to work...
